Why I Don’t Take Facebook Quizes

Did you know your personal answers on FaceBook Quizes/Games/Applications can and are sold to advertisers? Including email address, name, address, relationship status, medical info, etc. Once you open a FB application the application’s developer has access to everything in your profile!!!

If you’re on Facebook you get flooded with invitations for beer, bowling, and hugs all through FaceBook, of course. But something in the back of my mind prevented me from running any of them. I couldn’t get past the ominous warning that states, “Allowing {application name} access will let it pull your profile information, photos, your friends’ info, and other content that it requires to work.”

Well now I am very glad I refrained even though I’m sure I could have gotten a 150+ IQ test result and immediately joined Mensa. PC World has a nice article that explains why I kept refusing to click through, even though I didn’t know why at the time. Fear of the unknown is sometimes good.

Do you use RSS

RSS stands for Real Simple Syndication.  It’s been around for quite some time, but for some reason, even though I program or install RSS feeds into many of we websites I develop, I had never really used it.  Recently I came across a few cool web design blogs I enjoyed reading and decided I’d like to check in on them more often.  But, I always forgot the web address or would forget for weeks and when I checked in, there’d be so much posted since the last time I’d checked I’d become overwhelmed.  I finally decided to use the RSS on the site and I tied it into my Mac Mail.

Then I became addicted.

Before I new it I was connected to over 5 RSS feeds.  They basically show up like an email in it’s own box.  So when the site has a new post, it’ll show up like an email and I can click to read most of the article or if it’s a long article, it’ll provide me with the direct link to the full article.

It’s a really easy way to keep up with the sites you enjoy or learn from.  Most mail clients have the ability now, whether Mac Mail, Outlook, MS Mail, or others (Google, Mozilla, etc).  You should try it. Actually, if you’re reading this from my website, you’ll notice in your address bar there’s an icon on the far right.  Click on that and you can subscribe to this RSS feed!

Happy Syndicating!

This is an attack site!

A major hiccup at Google Saturday morning caused the entire Internet to be flagged as malware.

For a short period during the hiccup, Firefox was blocking access to Web sites with the standard “This is an attack site!” warning.  And, Google search results had the “This site may harm your computer” next to each result.

This was a Google problem and didn’t have anything to do your website, but so many people use Google to reach sites, it could have seemed to your customer something was wrong.

If your customers happen to have experienced this when trying to access your site through Google, you may want to explain this to them.  Here is an article for more info:  http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/01/this-site-may-harm-your-computer-on.html

Getting Your Business Listed On GPS Units

I’ve received an increasing number of emails from small business owners recently. They want to know how to get their businesses on the millions of GPS units sold across the country.  They might have a GPS of their own and have tried unsuccessfully to find their business, or it might be a new business and they assume they are not yet listed on the map. So as a business owner, how do you get yourself on the map?

First, it is important to remember that just because you can’t find your business on a GPS device doesn’t necessarily mean it isn’t on the map. It just might not be on that GPS. The GPS manufacturers don’t include each and every POI due to storage space and cost limitations. But, if you want to be sure you’ve got a shot at inclusion you can report your business to the major mapping companies to make sure they have your information.

The appropriate URLs are listed below. You will enter the address of your business, and then the type of change you want to perform is to add a POI. For NAVTEQ, you will want to select the ‘POI is missing’ item under the ‘Point of Interest’ section. For Tele Atlas you will select ‘Point of Interest’ and then ‘Add Point of Interest’.

NAVTEQ:
mapreporter.navteq.com

Tele Atlas:
mapfeedback.teleatlas.com.

InfoUSA:
dbupdate.infousa.com.

If you have lots of businesses or a chain of businesses, you might not find that type of feedback form to be efficient. In that case, both NAVTEQ and Tele Atlas have programs for you to keep all of your locations up-to-date. You can check out NAVTEQ’s Direct Access program and ContentLink program from Tele Atlas.

Remember that some units, especially older ones, don’t have the ability to update their POIs, and even if the unit does have the ability, it doesn’t mean the user does.  Even if the user has the ability, many people won’t take the time to update their unit.  However, it’s never too late to get started, new units are being sold everyday!  Best of luck!

Being Lazy

I was speaking with a client the other day who owns an ecommerce website.  We were discussing a method to update the shipping on each product on his site and how he could go in and update a few variables that would apply to all of his products.  I kept suggesting we do it a different way that would save a lot of time and would be more efficient for future use, but he kept misunderstanding what I was saying.

Then it finally dawned on him, “oh, you can do that?”  The he said, “I always say, give a lazy man something to do and he’ll find the best way to do it.”.

I took it as a compliment.  Sometimes lazy people work smarter.

I don’t promote being lazy, but I loathe repetitive processes when there’s a function that can be used instead.  Of course this is where you have to be practical too.  Don’t spend 2hrs trying to figure out a process to automate 10 repetitions.  Be creative, be smart, be lazy, but be practical!
